Johann Strauss II | Libretto by Richard Genée & Carl Haffner

Die Fledermaus (1874)

Performed at The Independent Theatre, April 2017

Synopsis

Glamour, champagne, and a healthy dose of revenge—Die Fledermaus is operetta at its most sparkling, and this stylish new production gives it a fresh twist, relocating the action to the glittering, jazz-infused world of New York in the roaring 20s.

At the centre of the chaos is Gabriel von Eisenstein, who’s supposed to be on his way to serve a short jail sentence. Instead, he’s convinced to attend an extravagant masked ball hosted by the mysterious and mischievous Prince Orlofsky. Unbeknownst to him, his wife Rosalinde, his maid Adele, and a whole host of colourful characters also have plans to attend, each with their own secrets and disguises. What follows is an effervescent night of flirtation, mistaken identity, and musical hilarity—complete with a delayed hangover of consequences the next morning.

With Strauss’s beloved score performed in the original German and a witty, fast-paced English script crafted by director Ian Warwick, this production offers all the elegance and energy of classic Fledermaus, infused with the glamour, grit, and golden-age charm of 1920s New York. It’s a joyous celebration of music, mischief, and the irresistible lure of a good party.
