La sonnambula
La sonnambula (1831)
Vincenzo Bellini Libretto by Felice Romani
Performed at The Independent Theatre, July 2016
Synopsis
A village wedding, a mysterious stranger, and a sleepwalker caught in the wrong place at the wrong time—Bellini’s La Sonnambula is a tender and haunting tale of love, misunderstanding, and redemption, wrapped in some of the most exquisite bel canto writing ever composed.
Amina, a sweet and innocent young woman, is set to marry Elvino, the man she adores. But when she is discovered asleep in the room of a visiting nobleman, Count Rodolfo, scandal erupts. Her apparent betrayal sends shockwaves through the tight-knit village, and Elvino, devastated, calls off the wedding.
But all is not as it seems. As the truth slowly comes to light, love is put to the ultimate test, and the resolution is as gentle and heartfelt as the opera’s lilting melodies.
Known for its shimmering vocal lines and emotional depth, La Sonnambula is a masterpiece of romantic opera. Bellini’s score combines pastoral charm with virtuosic brilliance, offering a moving exploration of trust, forgiveness, and the mystery of the human heart.
