Young baritone Matthew Avery launched his performance career at age 14 as Javert for his high school’s production of Les Miserables .
Several productions and successful eisteddfods later at age 19, he became one of 8 finalists for the Intermediate Joan Sutherland Scholarship at the prestigious Sydney Eisteddfod. He was then invited to perform as a Guest Artist for the finals of the Instrumental Ensemble Section.
The same year Matthew was accepted into the prestigious and internationally acclaimed Young Americans College of Performing Arts. New Kids 2011 included 120 young performers from all over the world – he was the only Australian.
After touring with YA throughout USA, Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Estonia he graduated with Honors in May, 2013.
Since his return from the USA, Matthew has performed principal Roles with Pakemin Productions at Riverside theatre in Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, and West Side Story, and last year made it into the top 6 for the Under 25 section of the Joan Sutherland Scholarship at the Sydney Eisteddfod
Matthew has just performed the role of the Lobster in the Australian Opera, The Water Babies and looks forward to doing more operatic productions in the future.
